Due to several demands concerning familiy history form all parts of the world, mainly from USA, our team "Herbstein Family History Team" (Arbeitskreis Familiengeschichte Herbstein), was inspired to make investigations about the emigrations from Herbstein during 18th and 19th centuries. We carefully examined the church records of Herbstein, the Public Record Office Darmstadt, the notes of the Association of Hesse Familiy History and the contemporary publications of the "Lauterbacher Anzeiger". There we found about 550 names of citizens who left their hometown rather officially at that time, with 29 of them following the call of Tsarina Katherina II to Russia and 150 citizens emigrating to the economic centers of the Ruhr region in Prussia. Most of them however, emigrated to America, the "country of unlimited possibilities", as they called it. Some emigrants returned, but most of them established a firm footing in the new lands. The dream of a new beginning was realized - a better life for themselves and their children.
Our research created friendly contacts to the descendants of emigrants, which were a great help to us.
